Current ASP Women’s World Champion, Stephanie Gilmore, was named Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year for her third world-title winning campaign in 2009. Gilmore beat out four other nominees for the award, including reigning ASP World Tour Champion, Mick Fanning, and big wave specialist, Greg Long. Gilmore joins a list of winners this year that includes track phenom, Usain Bolt, and tennis superstar, Serena Williams.
“This is unbelievable, not in my wildest dreams I thought I would be up here,” Gilmore said. “I just go surfing and have so much fun. I had so much fun last year.”
